Willwood farmers sell beef at Hillside

If you walk into Hillside Floral Local Market & Gifts expecting to find just flowers, you’re in for a surprise.

While the store does offer blooms for all occasions, there’s also a variety of gift and food options including beef from LB Farms.

“People walk in and say, ‘I thought this was a flower shop,” owner Shelley Hill said. “I'm like, ‘Oh yeah, but it's more than flowers,’ My tagline is there's way more in here than flowers, but our flowers are amazing too.”

In 2024, Hill wanted to better fill out the store, so she decided to open up the space to vendors in the area.

“We have a little bit of everything,” she said. “I've got a lady that brings in gifts, clothes and shoes. We started selling raw milk, and then from there we started selling the beef, and then I have a lady from Bridger that brings in bacon, ham, Italian sausage and brats.”

When Hill had the idea to open up the space she held a meeting for anyone interested. Shelley Brown of LB Farms was in attendance. She and her husband Lance have a farm and ranch on Willwood where they raise registered red and Black Angus cattle.

“We feed them through our own feedlot with our own hay and our own processed corn,” she said. “It's a lot of hard work, but we can do what we want and when we want. They're healthy, happy cows, and anybody's welcome to come see them anytime.”

The Browns moved to the Powell area five years ago from Montana. Shelley had attended Northwest College and had been on the livestock judging team so she was familiar with the area.

“We were on a homestead of both my great-grandparents and my husband's up there,” she said. “We lived in Western Montana, about 20 miles from where they filmed Yellowstone, and then Covid also happened, and about 200,000 people moved into our valley.”

At Hillside, there’s a variety of cuts available through the store including steak, roast, hamburger and beef jerky.

“It's been really popular,” Brown said. “I would sell out every month if I didn't keep it stocked two or three times a month, and we have two freezers full there. The hamburger is $6 a pound. The grocery store beef, you don't know where it came from or what it got fed or anything, and it's more expensive.”

She tries to keep the freezer stocked consistently but got a little behind in late August as Jose’s Meat Processing was busy with fair animals.

Currently there are 25 vendors in Hillside Floral Local Market & Gifts offering everything from shoes, clothes, skincare lines, soaps, gifts, food items and more. Hill has vendor showcases about every quarter to highlight all the different offerings.

“They can come and talk to the customers if they want, or just come in and shop,” she said. “Last fall we did a sip and shop and I do a spring fling.”

Hill also added pork products in May of this year.

“It's not near as popular as the hamburger, but it's starting to grow,” Hill said. “She flavors it great, and the bacon was amazing because you know we have to try it.”

She said interested vendors should come in and talk to her, and if it’s a product that’s not already offered in the store they’ll go from there.

“It just kind of depends on what you're bringing in or selling, and if there's people that are interested in that,” Hill said.
