Powell High School raises 1,400 pounds of food for Loaves and Fishes

After joining forces for the first time, Powell High School’s student council and National Honor Society chapter raised more than 1,400 pounds of food for Loaves and Fishes during a month-long food drive that began in November.

Following an hour of counting, weighing and sorting, Loaves and Fishes retrieved the food with the help of some NHS students.

“It was huge, I never saw a food drive at Powell High School or Powell Middle School this wild,” student council and NHS member Gabby Paterson said.

The success of the food drive was largely helped by a fierce competition between the classrooms of Powell High School teachers Tracy McArthur and Brandon Preator.

NHS adviser Tammy Schiermeister said Aramonie Brinkerhoff, an NHS student, had gone to the store and purchased $150 worth of food to donate to McArthur’s class, of which she is a member. When Preator caught wind of her good fortune he allegedly began convincing other classrooms to donate their food to him. Powell High School junior and NHS member Emma Johnson said one friend who was not in Preator’s class even donated food in an effort to help him beat McArthur. Preator won by over 200 pounds of food but Johnson said the classes brought each other donuts when all was said and done.

Traditionally NHS hosts an annual food drive at Powell High School where classrooms compete for a prize. This year when NHS’s originally planned food drive was delayed and student council talked about running a food drive of their own, students Paterson, Kalin Hicswa and Sydney Spomer discussed combining forces. Paterson and NHS adviser  Schiermeister said that working together was not a big leap since a lot of upperclassmen students serve both on NHS and student council.

Student council adviser Kaitlin Loeffen said Preator raised 659 pounds and McArthur raised 382 pounds. Eleven classrooms participated in the fundraiser.

“I appreciate all the students that brought food,” Schiermeister said. “That goes to a worthy cause.”

Johnson said she appreciated that even though Powell is a small community, students came together to “pitch in” for those in need.
