PHS boys track battles in pair of meets on the road

The Powell Panther boys’ track and field team competed in a pair of difficult meets — finishing third at the Cody Trackstravaganza on Thursday and just edging out the competition to win the Bobcat Invite on Friday in Thermopolis.

CODY TRACKSTRAVAGANZA

Making the short trip over to Cody on Thursday the Panthers battled during a day that consisted of beautiful weather and windy weather to a third place finish.

Despite the up and down weather, the Panthers came out with five individual event wins.

Hyrum Jeide swept the hurdles, winning the 110 meter hurdles (15.65) and the 300 meter hurdles (40.79); Isaiah Woyak won the high jump clearing 6 feet, 4 inches; Nathan Dupont won the long jump (19-8 1/2) and Cody Seifert won the triple jump (40-6).

Powell added one new qualifying time, with Stuart Shoopman adding a qualifying time in the 110 hurdles (16.68).

The Panthers also got second place finishes from Daniel Merritt in the 1600 meters (4:37.61) in a race that came down to a leaning finish, and from Jeremy Harms in the pole vault (12-6).

Overall Powell finished with 120 points, behind 4A schools Cody (186) and Sheridan (182.33) and comfortably ahead of 3A Worland (67) in fourth place.

BOBCAT INVITE

Heading to Thermopolis the Panthers came up against new competition that they haven’t seen this season, matching up with three new 3A teams and a host of smaller schools at the Bobcat Invite.

“It was nice to get to see the variety of competition we were able to this weekend in both the Cody and Thermopolis meets,” coach Scott Smith said. “Between the two we got to compete against some of the top teams in all classes and our kids did a nice job against them all.”

Powell again had a strong day in the hurdles, where Jeide won the 110 (15.45) just ahead of Stuart Shoopman in third (15.91) and Simon Shoopman (16.06) in fourth.

“It has been really good to see Hyrum, Simon and Stuart come through with personal records in the hurdles this weekend,” Smith said. “They have all been fighting through injuries and have done a great job of taking care of themselves, healing and improving all season long.”

The 4x100 relay team of Jeide, Dupont, Simon Shoopman and Seifert won with a time of 45.95.

Second place finishes for the Panthers came from Merritt in the 800 (2:03.91), Korbyn Warren in the 1600 (5:01.54) and Harms in the pole vault (12-6).

Powell edged out the competition for the team win, finishing with 92.5 points just ahead of Rivertion (86) in second and Burlington (80.5) in third.

REGIONAL MEET

Powell now heads to Worland to take part in the 3A West Regional meet on Friday and Saturday at Worland High School.

The Panthers are the defending regional champions, and have an opportunity to repeat this weekend.

“We are really hoping to bring back a lot of individual and relay hardware this weekend,” Smith said. “If we can do that, the team scores will take care of themselves.”

Powell currently has half of the relays prequalified for the state meet, the 4x100 and the 1600 sprint medley, alongside 17 prequalifying marks in other track and field events.

The top eight spots in individual events and top four relays will advance to the state meet even if they do not meet the required prequalifying time.

Field events will kick off Friday at noon with track events starting 15 minutes after.

Saturday will have field events kicking off at 9 a.m. and races will again start 15 minutes later.

After this weekend the Panthers will have one weekend of competition with the state meet in Casper beginning next Thursday at Kelly Walsh High School.
