Panther swimming remains unbeaten

The Powell Panther girls swim and dive team continued its unbeaten record this past week — winning a triangular in Worland on Thursday before escaping with a win in Douglas on Saturday.

WORLAND TRI

Beginning the week the Panthers met up with Cody and Worland on the road on Thursday, where Powell ended up with a 43-point victory in a triangular.

Powell was powered by seven event victories.

That started with a victory in the 200 medley relay where Patricia Christensen, Kathryn Brence, Kaitlin Diver and Addy Powell won with a 2:05.19.

Powell also won the 200 free relay in 1:53.42 with a team of Kik Hayano, Paige Thomas, Baylee Brence and Powell.

Hayano won two events including the 200 free (2:12.26) and the 100 fly (1:05.71); Diver won the 200 IM (2:34.22); Emma Brence won diving (143.7) and Kathryn Brence won the 100 breast (1:17.08).

“In her butterfly race Kik was able to do more underwater swimming than any other athlete we have seen in our competitions this year,” coach Bob Smartt said.

The meet was scored to eight places with Emma Brence securing her first victory of her high school career in diving.

DOUGLAS INVITE

The Panthers made the trip to Douglas on Saturday, taking part in an invitational that featured five 3A teams and one 4A team. A short-handed Powell team rallied late to earn another victory.

“The Douglas pool is 25 meters in length which makes for confusion as to whether an athlete swam a best time,” Smartt said. “We were missing five athletes who each would have contributed to the scoring.”

Powell had one victory on the day, with Charlee Brence winning the 100 fly (1:17.53).

The Panthers had seven second place finishes after Brence, trailing by five points to Douglas after 10 events.

In the breast, Powell had four of the top six swimmers, who helped Powell pull ahead late to earn the victory with 324 points compared to Douglas’ 309.

That moved Powell to 8-0 this season, with the Panthers heading back on the road for a single meet this weekend.

That will be in Buffalo on Saturday morning, before Powell returns home next week to host a triangular on senior night on Tuesday at the Powell Aquatic Center.
