Panther girls compete in competitive week

Regionals kick off Friday

A busy weekend on the track put the Powell Panther girls’ track and field team to the test — finishing fourth at the Cody Trackstravaganza on Thursday and running away with the Bobcat Invite team title in Thermopolis on Friday.

CODY TRACKSTRAVAGANZA

The weather was hit and miss for the Panthers on Thursday, as a beautiful day transitioned to a windy competition by its conclusion.

Luckily for the Panthers the fireworks came early in the day, with the 4x800 relay team of Kinley Cooley, Kenna Jacobsen, Megan Jacobsen and Anna Bartholomew smashing the school record with a time of 9:42.3 to finish second.

“That relay was incredible to watch,” coach Scott Smith said. “Records are usually broken by less than a second, shattered by a couple of seconds so I’m not sure how to describe how big a deal their record breaking performance was.”

The previous record was 9:53.29 set in 2012 by Desiree Murray, Tally Wells, Sierra Morrow and Kassey MacDonald.

The mark in Cody is the best time in the state this season for 3A, 17 seconds ahead of Rawlins as the Panthers hold two of the top three times this year after improving their initial time by 31 seconds.

Overall the Panthers had two first place finishes, with Addy Thorington winning the high jump clearing 5 feet, 1 inch, and Ine Kolstad winning the triple jump with a distance of 33-8.

Katie O’Brien shot past the state qualifying mark in the shot put (36-5) to get her first qualifying mark of the season.

Powell was unable to overcome top competition from 4A Sheridan (173) and Cody (157.5) in the team standings and was just behind Worland (143.5) with 123.5 points.

After a difficult competition Thursday, the Panthers made their way to Thermopolis on Friday to experience a different set of teams in a larger team setting — running away with the team competition with 171.5 points, nearly 100 ahead of second placed Pinedale.

Individually Powell won five events including sweeping the distance races.

Bartholomew won the 800 (2:27.58); Myah Rakness won the 1600 meters (5:47.03); Cooley won the 3200 meters (12:44.9); Thorington won the high jump (4-11) and Waycee Harvey won the triple jump (34-4).

The 4x400 relay team of Audrey Johnson, the Jacobsen sisters and Bartholomew won with a time of 4:14.13.

Powell added another qualifying mark for Grace Coombs, who qualified in the shot put (34-10).

“It was really nice to see the hard work both Grace and Katie put in since January come through — with both going into regionals pre-qualified in the shot put,” Smith said.

Powell saw multiple new opponents for the first time this season, such as Pinedale, Rawlins and Riverton.

REGIONAL MEET

Powell now heads down to Worland to take part in the 3A West Regional meet on Friday and Saturday at Worland High School.

The Panthers head in as the two-time defending regional champions, and are looking to make it three straight.

“Our kids are positioned well in the team races and we really are looking forward to seeing a lot more personal records this week,” Smith said.

Powell has every relay prequalified for the state meet, and 21 prequalified marks in track and field events.

The top eight individual finishers at the regional meet and top four relays will automatically advance to the state meet.

Field events are set to begin at noon on Friday with track events to begin shortly after at 12:15 p.m.

Saturday kicks off early with field events beginning at 9 a.m. followed by track events beginning at 9:15 a.m.

After this weekend the Panthers will have one weekend of competition with the state meet in Casper beginning next Thursday.
