Loaves and Fishes food drive Wednesday

Powell Valley Loaves and Fishes is asking the community for food or monetary donations from 5:30-8 p.m. Wednesday for its 35th annual fall food drive.

Over 300 kids from various local youth groups will come around to Powell homes and collect food items to share with local families in need.

“From January through September, Loaves and Fishes have helped 692 families and a total of 2,392 people,” Loaves and Fishes Treasurer Cindy Balderas said.

The nonprofit organization asks for the community to help give back to those in need during the holiday season by either donating professionally processed food items at the time of the event, leaving them in a bag by the front door or bringing the items to Blair’s Super Market, Mr. D’s Food Center or the Powell Annex that evening.

To ensure safety, groups are accompanied with adults and will not collect food in alleyways.

Balderas asked those living in an alley to bring food to a grocery store with a designated Loaves and Fishes bin that evening or talk to neighbors about giving them food items to donate.

Monetary donations are also being accepted Wednesday evening — or they can be mailed to Loaves and Fishes at P.O. Box 992, Powell, WY 82435.

“We appreciate the support that we receive from the community and the town of Powell,” Balderas said. “We just want to feed the people in town.”

Since one annual food drive can’t supply a whole year of food, Loaves and Fishes accepts food or monetary donations all year-round.

The Postal Service has its own annual food drive in the springtime, around Mother’s Day, which also supports Powell Valley Loaves and Fishes.
