After two terms as Cody’s mayor, Matt Hall is considering a run for the Wyoming Legislature.
Hall announced his interest in a statehouse seat during an appearance on KODI 1400 AM’s Speak Your Piece program last week.
“I get along well with all of our legislators, so I’d have to kind of talk to them a little bit if I wanted to really go toe to toe with some of them,” Hall said on the Oct. 27 broadcast, “But if some of those seats were to open up, I’d certainly want to think about it.”
Hall lives in House District 24, which is currently represented by Rep. Sandy Newsome (R-Cody), and Senate District 18, which is represented by Sen. Tim French (R-Powell). Both seats are up for election in 2024.
Newsome said Wednesday that she has not yet decided whether she’ll seek a fourth two-year term. The Tribune was unable to immediately contact French, who is in his first four-year term in the Senate.
Hall is in his seventh year as the mayor of Cody and his current term will end in January 2025.
Though the job has been difficult at times — Hall mentioned the COVID-19 pandemic, the high profile arrival (and subsequent departure) of Kanye West and the recent contention over the proposed temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — he said it’s “been a really incredible experience for me.”
The variety of subjects he’s gotten to learn about, “it’s just something that really feeds my soul,” Hall said on KODI.
While saying he enjoys politics, the mayor was far from committing to a 2024 campaign. When he floated the idea of a legislative run on the broadcast, Hall introduced it by saying he “might try and maybe look at another office, potentially.”
“We’ll see,” he said.
The filing period for 2024 candidates opens on May 15.
