Lula L. Cardwell, 84, died Jan. 10, 2010, in Billings.
Lula was born on Sept. 1, 1925, in Taopi, Minn., to John and Lala (Mason) Wolhoy.
She graduated high school and attended teachers’ college in Springfield, S.D. briefly before spending three years teaching in rural South Dakota. She was the first of three generations of teachers.
In 1946, she married Wilbur “Bill” House of Springfield. Wilbur died of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning in 1984. Lula later married Jack Cardwell on Feb. 16, 2002, in Powell.
Lula spent her adult life living in various places, including Pine Ridge, S.D., Lawrence, Kan., Billings, Red Lodge, Burlington, Cody and Powell. She was a member of the Bennett Creek First Baptist Church in Clark, and she had a strong faith in God and enjoyed church activities.
Lula was an accomplished seamstress. She excelled at quilt-making and won many awards for her quilts. She enjoyed traveling, embroidery, gardening, reading and cooking.
Lula is survived by her husband, Jack Cardwell, of Powell; son Steve House of Waupaca, Wisc.; daughter Kayleen Hogan of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; sister Patti Roberts; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bill House; her parents; and a son, Merle House.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14 at Thompson Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place, with interment to take place in Red Lode Cemetery in the spring. Following the service a reception will take place at Rocky Mountain Manor.
