Graveside funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12 at the Cowley Cemetery for J. Ted Johnson, 83, former Cowley and Powell resident, who died Monday, July 7 at Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
He was born Jan. 22, 1920, in Cowley to John Edward Johnson and Inez Geraldine Johnson. He grew up in Cowley and attended schools there, then graduated from Byron High School.
He served in the U.S. Navy and was at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed at the beginning of World War II. He rejoined the armed forces in the 1950s in the U.S. Army as a Supply Sergeant and served in the Vietnam War, as well, before his retirement in the 1970s.
He married Clara Nadine Egan on Nov. 27, 1946, in Billings, Mont. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
He was a career military man most of his life and managed a propane distributorship after his retirement from the service. In 1967, the couple made their home in Powell. Three years ago, they moved to Idaho Falls to be near their daughters.
A member of the LDS Church, he served as a High Priest. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a beautiful whistler and enjoyed tinkering with machinery.
Survivors include his wife Nadine of Idaho Falls; two daughters, Nancy (Helmut) Worle of Idaho Falls and Linda (Larry) Singleton of Osgood, Idaho; a sister, Alice Webster of Bountiful, Utah; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Bruce, Glenn (Penny), Milas (Mike), Van and Rex; three sisters, Maude, Malena and Verona; and a grandson, Jared Worle.
Burial with military rites will be in the Cowley Cemetery, under the direction of Haskell Funeral Home.
