He graduated from Meeteetse High School in 1941 and attended the University of Wyoming before he was drafted into the U.S. Army.

Upon his return in 1945, he worked on the family ranch. John loved all aspects of the ranching lifestyle. His favorite time of year was the fall, when he could admire the fruits of his labor.

On Sept. 23, 1957, he married Lucille Peterson. He immediately became the father to sons: Barney, Pete and Bill Roussan and Lynn Coale and daughter Emily Coale. Then came his sons John Lawrence Hogg and Allen Robson Hogg and daughter Julie Elizabeth.

He served on the Meeteetse School Board, Wyoming Stockgrower’s Association and was active in local and state conservation districts.

As a lifelong athlete he played many years on the Meeteetse town basketball team, and sports were his passion.

In 1981 he became famous when his ranch dog, Shep, killed a black-footed ferret in the front yard. He was revered as “the man who saved the black-footed ferret.” In 2011, he participated in the 30th anniversary of the discovery of the black-footed ferret in Meeteetse.

John is survived by his son, Allen (Kristine); daughter, Julie E. (Kelly) Hammond; daughter-in-law Ronee Hogg; sons Bill (Kathy) Roussan  and Lynn (Sarah) Coale; daughter Emily Coale; and daughter-in-law Connie Roussan. Many Roussan, Coale and Hogg grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive him, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers; wife; and son John L. Hogg.
