Written by Tribune Staff

(Feb. 26, 1937 - April 6, 2002)

Memorial services will be held at the Calvary Chapel Church in Buffalo at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 20 for Janet Sprinkle Brownlee, former Powell resident who died Sunday, April 6. She was 65.

She was born Feb. 26, 1937, in Denver, Colo., daughter of Lee and Florence Sprinkle. A 1955 graduate of Wheatridge High School in Denver, she continued her education at the University of Wyoming, earning a major in education and a minor in psychology.

She met Fred Brownlee at UW, and they were married June 8, 1958, in Denver. Her husband's six-month army commission stint took them to Ft Benning, Ga., then on to Ft. Carson, Colo. In 1959, both Fred and Janet accepted teaching positions at Saratoga.

Their first child, Kevin, was born in Saratoga in 1960. Daughter Julie was born in Afton in 1963.
In Afton, her husband began a 34-year career with the U.S. Farmers Home Administration. Working for the government, the family lived in many Wyoming communities, including Powell, before retiring in Buffao.
She devoted herself to children, teaching piano lessons, Bible classes and helping with 4-H. Music was a special love for her, as she sang in choirs and groups. She said her greatest achievement in this life was to realize at age 18 that she was a sinner and thus her need of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Her Christian testimony remained strong to the end of her life, even as she battled cancer.

She loved the mountains and was able to spend many weeks each summer in the Big Horn Mountains in the family camper.
Survivors include her husband Fred of Buffalo; son Kevin Brownlee and wife Bunny of Belgrade, Mont.; daughter Julie Peter and husband Dennis of Arvada, Colo.; two brothers, Bob Sprinkle of Grand Junction, Colo., and Dale Sprinkle of Surry, Maine; and three grandchildren.

For those who wish, the family would appreciate memorials to Compassion International, in care of First National Bank, P.O. Box 400, Buffalo, WY 82834, or Allan and Baska Vance, in care of Conservative Baptist International, P.O. Box 5, Wheaton, IL 60189-0005 (serving in Portugal). Cremation has taken place. The family will scatter her ashes in the Big Horn Mountains.
