Dustin and Heather Pike have a wedding day do-over in Florida

Exactly a year after their wedding day took a tragic turn, Dustin and Heather Pike celebrated their marriage with an “I Do Redo” in Florida.

The couple had originally planned to get married in Cancun, Mexico, on Nov. 14, 2014.

As family and friends gathered for the special day, they soon got terrible news: Theresa Pike, Dustin’s mom, had fallen in the lobby of the resort and hit her head. Theresa was rushed to a hospital with massive brain hemorrhaging.

Doctors told the Pike family to say goodbye to Theresa as she went in for emergency surgery.

Miraculously, Theresa survived the surgery. She was later flown to Houston, Texas, for treatment. She and her husband, Jim Pike, remained there for a few months before returning home to Powell in February 2015.

As she recovered, many people rallied around the Pike family, hoping Theresa and Dustin could share a mother-and-son dance to the song, “Dancing in the Moonlight.”

One year later — on Nov. 14, 2015 — they stepped onto the dance floor together.

“It was great,” Dustin said. “I think it was closure to a redemption story we were all waiting to experience.”

Third time’s a charm

After their November 2014 wedding day was postponed, Dustin and Heather eloped on New Year’s Eve in New York City, where they were living at the time.

But the couple still hoped to have a big wedding celebration with their family members and friends.

Last spring, they entered an “I Do Redo” contest through Marriott Pompano Beach Resort & Spa in Florida. The prize was a stunning beach ceremony overlooking the Atlantic and a reception with everything provided — food, drinks, a wedding cake, flowers, photography, music and a stay at the resort.

Dustin and Heather shared their story, and Marriott selected them as the winners of the contest “for a much-deserved wedding do-over,” Marriott wrote.

“They paid for everything and arranged all of the wedding festivities,” Dustin said.

He added that Marriott was “unbelievably accommodating.”

For Dustin, one of the best moments was seeing Heather have the special day she deserved, he said.

“It was a celebration for my bride to finally have her day, as well as a reunion of everyone who was there for us in Cancun,” Dustin said. “That is all I could have hoped for and more.”

The couple was joined in Florida by almost all of their family members and friends who had been in Cancun the previous year.

While it wasn’t the wedding day they had originally expected, the couple remains thankful.

“Of course, we would have preferred to not go through the horrible events in Cancun,” Dustin said. “However, we are forever grateful for all the love and support we received along the way. We are so thankful to the community of Powell, our friends and family as well as Marriott for rallying behind our family. They were the ones that made our wedding do-over truly special.”

As Theresa recovered, Heather spearheaded fundraising efforts to help with medical bills and treatment, using the online hashtag #HelpTheresaDance.

Support came from the Powell community as well as from friends, family members and even strangers across the country.

Dustin called the Powell community “such a fantastic group of people.”

“They came to our aid to help save my mother’s life with more love and support than we could have ever imagined,” he said. “It truly was astonishing to see how selfless the Powell community is and also their commitment to one another. My family will forever be indebted to everyone involved.”

Back at home in Powell, Theresa Pike continues to recover well.

“She keeps getting better,” Jim Pike said last week.
