A Cody man died late Friday afternoon near Farson and his passenger was seriously injured when the car he was driving was struck head-on by a pickup truck.
Gerald J. Haugen, 75, of Cody was driving east on Wyo. Highway 28, 34 miles east of Farson, when a Ford 350 driven by David S. Hoyt of Apache Junction, Ariz., crossed the center lane and struck Haugen’s 2013 Chrysler Town & Country.
Hoyt was westbound when his vehicle went off the highway on the right side. He over-corrected the steering back to the left, bringing the vehicle back onto the roadway, where it crossed into the opposite lane of travel.
After impact, both vehicles came to rest in the eastbound barrow ditch.
Haugen’s passenger, Georgianna Haugen, was extricated from the vehicle and flown via helicopter to Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Wyo. 28, also known as South Pass Highway, was closed approximately three hours.
Hoyt was cited for driving while under suspension, failure to maintain his vehicle within a single lane and no proof of insurance.
After troopers complete the crash investigation, the Fremont County Attorney's Office will make the determination about the filing of any additional criminal charges.
