Suspects in Clark murders taking plea deal

Written by CJ Baker

The two young Cody men charged with murdering three Clark residents back in March are set to be sentenced next week.

A document filed today (Tuesday) in Park County's District Court says Tanner B. Vanpelt and Stephen F. Hammer will change their pleas from not guilty and be sentenced on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 3. The filing indicates a plea agreement has been reached between the 19-year-olds' attorneys and the Park County Attorney's Office.

Vanpelt and Hammer each face 11 felony charges -- including first-degree murder -- in connection with the March 2 murders of Ildiko Freitas and her parents, Janos and Hildegard Volgyesi. Hammer and Vanpelt have been held without bond since their arrests in Clark several hours after the murders. Police have said the two admitted to shooting the three family members, with Hammer allegedly acknowledging he shot Hildegard Volgyesi and Vanpelt having shot all three Clark residents.

No information was immediately available about what the plea agreements might entail, but the fact that there is a deal means the death penalty will not be sought. Anything up to life without the possibility of parole would remain a possibility.

"Police have said the two admitted to shooting the three family members, with Hammer allegedly acknowledging he shot Hildegard Volgyesi and Vanpelt having shot all three Clark residents".

And the cowards of the American legal profession cop a plea deal to spare a pair of two legged rat murderers.

I guess pursuing justice would take up too much of their precious time hob-knobbing.

Sad, we spent more time fighting proposed smoking bans, than these legal professionals did pursuing justice for 3 people in our community shot and killed in pre-meditated cold blood.

    Legal cowards.

too bad, they deserve the death penalty...not right for the law abiding citizens to have to pay for their comfort for the next 50 plus years

    Well,
It appears that the Criminal Justice system is like a menu. Pick what you want and that's it! One has to realize there is no financial gain if you take there lives. But put them in prison and we will have to take care of them for the rest of there lives. About $30,000.00 each year.
