A driver’s failure to yield resulted in a two-vehicle crash that injured three people Tuesday afternoon.
Cheyenne Slaught, 21, of Powell, was driving westbound on Lane 11 at about noon when she failed to yield to crossing traffic at the intersection of Road 12, according to a report from the Park County Sheriff’s Office.
Her 1998 Chevrolet four-door broadsided a 2002 Chevy pickup driven southbound by Guadalupe Flores, 65, also from Powell.
“Both vehicles sustained heavy damage,” said Lance Mathess, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, in the report.
Flores had to be extricated from her truck by the Powell Volunteer Fire Department. Kenya Spomer, 19, of Powell, a passenger in Slaught’s vehicle, also was extricated.
All three victims were taken to Powell Valley Hospital with injuries, Mathess said.
Flores and Slaught were treated and released Tuesday, and Spomer was admitted to the hospital, according to Jim Cannon, Powell Valley Healthcare spokesman. Spomer was released Wednesday, Cannon said.
Flores was wearing her seat belt. It is unknown whether Slaught or Spomer were wearing seat belts, Mathess said. Airbags on both sides of Slaught’s car were deployed.
The investigation is ongoing, and no citations had been issued as of Tuesday, Mathess said.
“However, based on driver and witness statements as well as evidence at the scene, deputies attributed the crash to speed and driver inattentiveness,” Mathess said.
He added that yield signs are clearly posted at the intersection for traffic on Lane 11.
