Wyoming veterans’ stories to be recorded for Library of Congress

The Libary of Congress and U.S. Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., will host a Veterans History Project Day in Cheyenne on Sept. 7.

At the event, local veterans will have the chance to record their personal stories to be archived in a permanent collection at the Library of Congress, with veterans and interviewers receiving their own copyrights. The Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden, will be present for the event on the Laramie County Community College campus.

Anyone age 15 or older can volunteer to help record veterans’ stories.

“This is your chance to honor the men and women in uniform in your lives,” Enzi said in a statement. “If you are a veteran or are interested in interviewing a veteran, my wife Diana and I encourage you to take part in this unique opportunity.”

Congress established the Veterans History Project in 2000 to collect the stories of America’s veterans and preserve their memories to educate future generations and honor those who served.

Interested veterans and volunteers are asked to RSVP for the Cheyenne event to Rachel_Vliem@enzi.senate.gov with their name, hometown and how they would like to participate.

A training workshop for volunteers will run from 10 a.m. to noon, with veterans’ stories recorded from 1-3 p.m. A formal donation ceremony with Hayden is set for 3 p.m., with the program coming to an end with closing remarks around 3:30 p.m.
