Wrestlers take sixth place at Bozeman invite

The Powell Panthers landed sixth in the hyper-competitive Tom LeProwse Bozeman Invitational Friday and Saturday.

Great Falls, Montana, won the event with 199 points to the Panthers’ 143.

“Overall I thought we wrestled pretty well,” said Powell High School head coach Nate Urbach said. “Sixth out of 31 teams, most of them 4A size, is a strong showing for that tournament.”

Seth Horton, at 152 pounds, and Bo Dearcorn, at 170 pounds, each took second place in their respective divisions.

“I thought Seth Horton wrestled extremely well to get into the finals” where “he gave a nationally ranked wrestler a tough match,” Urbach said. Horton lost a 5-1 decision to Hunter Meinzen of Missoula Big Sky.

“Bo Dearcorn also wrestled very well,” Urbach said.

Like Horton, Dearcorn won four straight matches to face a top opponent: No. 1-ranked Cooper Hoffman of Dillon, Montana. Hoffman took a 14-3 major decision.

Meanwhile, at 103 pounds, Colt Nicholson posted a 5-2 record.

“Colt Nicholson had a great tournament [and] ended up placing fourth in a tough
bracket” where he “won a couple of gritty matches,” Urbach said.

The coach said Michael Maddox (132 pounds) “wrestled well in a very tough bracket” and Corey Linebaugh (138) “had a good weekend” in which he “won a couple of closely contested matches. Linebaugh, the coach added, is “really turning the corner thus far this year.”

Linebaugh finished seventh at the Bozeman tourney, while Matthew Seckman, at 182 pounds, took eighth.

“Matthew Seckman moved to 182 this week [and] looked good, especially on Friday,” Urbach. “If he stays healthy, he will be someone to watch come February.”

For Carson Olsen (205), the Bozeman event was the first tournament of the year — and he did not disappoint with a fifth-place finish.

Olsen, said his coach, “came back in two different matches [and] showed a ton of guts.”

Next up for the PHS varsity wrestlers will be a Tuesday dual at Laurel, Montana, high school. The Panthers’ first home match of the new year comes Feb. 7.
