Wrestlers show growth at Ron Thon

Powell High School’s wrestlers had a weekend of mixed results during an extended stay in Riverton. The Panthers defeated the Wolverines 48-33 Thursday night, and ran into some difficult matchups at the annual Ron Thon Memorial tournament on Friday and Saturday.

RON THON

The varsity squad faced some difficult opponents, competing against top teams from all classes during the Ron Thon Memorial.

“We ran into some guys that had tough brackets and some guys that eked out some wins over us,” Panther head coach Nick Fulton said.

The one Panther who placed on the weekend for varsity competition was junior Yessenia Teague; she won the fifth through eighth bracket and took fifth place overall for the 126-pound girls’ division.

Outside of Teague, senior Karson Lamb advanced the furthest for the Panthers. Lamb made it to the quarterfinals at 182 pounds, where he ran into Zachary Patterson from Star Valley (who’s 34-0 on the season). Lamb finished 1-2 on the weekend and lost in the consolation rounds.

At 170 pounds, Stetson Davis finished 3-2. He lost in the second round to Colson Coon of Sheridan before losing in the fourth round of the consolation bracket.

Other results for the Panthers included:

Weston Thomas went 0-2 at 113 pounds;

Brent Childers went 0-2 at 126 pounds;

Andrew Valdez (12-15) went 1-2 at 138 pounds;

Carter Gines went 2-2 at 160 pounds;

Lannon Brazelton (8-11) went 1-2 at 160 pounds;

Jimmy Dees (26-14) went 2-2 at 195;

Adam Flores (14-14) went 0-2 at 285.

At the junior varsity level, sophomore Wyatt Heffington won at 126 pounds, freshman Doug Bettger placed second at 220, sophomore Jonathan Harms placed fifth at 195, freshman Jacob Eaton placed fifth at 220 and freshman Dusty Carter placed sixth at 182.

“Junior varsity wrestled really well,” Fulton said “I am really excited with what they are doing.”

POWELL 48, RIVERTON 33

Before the Ron Thon got underway, the Panthers took part in a conference dual with Riverton on Thursday and walked away with a much improved effort from their earlier dual against Worland.

“We were more aggressive and definitely showed more fight on the mat,” Fulton said. “Our mentality was a lot better.”

The match started out close, as Thomas earned a victory by pin in the first period.

“It was nice to get Weston [Thomas] back on the mat,” Fulton said. “He beat the third-ranked kid pretty handedly.”

Riverton followed that up with two straight victories by technical fall and majority decision before Jeremy Harms earned a victory at 132 pounds by pin in the second period.

The Panthers then got two straight forfeits before Mitchell Wainscott got a victory at 152 pounds in the first period.

Riverton responded with a pin before Davis and Lamb got pins and Riverton forfeited at 195.

The Wolverines got the final three victories to make the final score 48-33.

“We wrestled really well against Riverton,” Fulton said. “It was nice to get that one especially in their gym.”

DUALS

The Panthers will now focus on a series of duals ahead of the regional tournament in three weeks.

PHS will take on Lander at 5 p.m. Friday in the only varsity action of the week.  Fulton said Powell plans to send some junior varsity wrestlers to a tournament in Greybull on Saturday.

“Last year was interesting where it was all duals; a lot of JV guys did not get mat time,” the coach said. “Last year they had 10 or 12 matches and it is so much better this year with tournaments.”

Fulton knows the team will be heading into a difficult matchup with Lander on their home mat, but is confident his team can compete with the Tigers.
