Did things go your way on Nov. 5? If they did, great for you, if they didn’t, well I’m sorry. However, our mandate as Christians is not to look to governments but to look to Jesus Christ. This is why my favorite passage in all of the New Testament is that of Hebrews 12:1-3. The readers of Hebrews upon arriving at Chapter 12 have just made it through the so-called “Hall of Faith.” There we read about the great followers of God who by faith accomplished great tasks and overcame what seemed to be impossible odds; we also see those who were martyred for the faith and Scripture proclaims of them that the world was not worthy. With this being the context the author of Hebrews declares that we are surrounded by these witnesses and thus we should drive on looking to Jesus, “The author and perfector of our faith.” Our eyes are not to be shifted from one side to the other but rather to be fixed on the one who won our salvation through his death, burial and resurrection.

Hope for the Christian is not found in a political party but rather in the steadfast promises of Jesus Christ. To paraphrase Paul, if we have hope in this life only our life kind of stinks and we’re wasting our time. But brothers and sisters, this is not the case; we have hope. A hope that has outlasted Rome, the Mongolian hordes, the Black Death and countless other savageries unnamed and it will outlast our brief time here on the mortal plane. So even if you are happy with the results, or if we even know the results yet, Jesus and his truth is eternal. As Balthasar Hubmaier, the unsung German reformer declared, “Truth is eternal.” It is to this eternal truth we rest in, the fact that God through his son has indeed won the victory and it is to him the King of Kings we should look.
