Weekend rain could cause issues in Crandall, North and South forks

The National Weather Service is predicting significant rain across the Absaroka Mountains this weekend. Officials say that could cause some flooding on the North and South forks of the Shoshone River and exacerbate sliding earth in the Crandall area.

“Given the current situation in Crandall and with all the rain projected for this weekend, it is possible residents will see increased activity on the current slide,” said Park County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lance Mathess, referring to a series of mudslides that have impacted the area around County Road XUX (Squaw Creek Road). Mathess said it’s possible that other areas could slide, too.

“In addition to the possible slides in Crandall, low-lying areas along the North and South forks of the Shoshone River could see scattered isolated flooding,” Mathess added. “And with the anticipated rainfall, the current [Shoshone National Forest] forest service road and trail conditions may change rapidly.”

Both the Sheriff’s Office and Shoshone officials are warning residents and visitors in those areas to take appropriate precautions; they also say outdoor enthusiasts should be prepared for the increasing risk of heavy rain late in the weekend through early next week.

Some 1 to 2 inches of rain are expected in the high country, especially Sunday through Tuesday. Local totals could reach 3 inches. The highest amounts are expected in the northern Wind River Mountains northward through the Absaroka Range. The lower elevations are expected to receive between 2/3 of an inch to 1 1/2 inches.

Forecasters are also predicating scattered to numerous showers and a few thunderstorms today (Friday) and Saturday. The threat of widespread significant rainfall increases Sunday and continues through at least Tuesday — and possibly into the middle of next week.
