The unseasonably wet and cool weather is causing problems with roads and trails in the Shoshone and Bighorn national forests.
Shoshone officials announced Friday that they’ve closed two roads for public safety reasons. Both have washed out due to spring run-off, making them “extremely unsafe,” said Kristie Salzmann, a spokeswoman for
the forest.
Line Creek Road, FSR 123, located north of Cody on the Clarks Fork District, is closed at its junction with FSR 123.2C. On the Greybull District west of Meeteetse, FSR 204.1A is closed at the junction with Timber Creek Road, FSR 204.
Friday’s release did not indicate when the Shoshone roads might reopen.
“... it remains uncertain when repairs will be made,” Salzmann said.
Meanwhile, Bighorn forest officials are delaying the opening of some roads and closing others to prevent resource damage and to protect public safety in the wet conditions.
“We are urging you to respect and comply with road closures,” said Bighorn National Forest Supervisor Andrew Johnson. “The need to repair ruts and other damage to roads and trails will limit the amount of other road maintenance the Forest Service will be able to perform this summer and may make travel difficult.”
He added that, “we are working to reopen routes as soon as conditions allow,” while thanking people for their patience.
Below is a list of roads closed on the Medicine Wheel Ranger District, which has been the most impacted by the conditions:
