Walter James McCauley, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018, at his home in Powell.

Walter was born Jan. 20, 1925, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Walter and Alice McCauley. He won appointment to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at the age of 17 and studied there and also at the Merchant Marine Academy.

He served in the U.S. Navy following World War II before becoming a deck officer for Matson Ship Lines. His travels took him throughout the Pacific, including his first trip to Maui in 1945.

Walter graduated from UCLA in 1951 at the top of his class and pursued a career as a certified public accountant in southern California. He maintained homes in Powell and on Maui the past 20 years.

Walter is survived by his wife, Carol; one son, James; two daughters, Dianne and Patricia; and three grandsons.

He leaves behind memories of his great sense of humor, his bridge skills, and most all, his kind, loving, generous heart.

There will be no local services. The family plans a burial at sea in January.
