Wainscott to play golf at Black Hills State

After distinguishing herself as one of the state’s top female golfers, Powell High School senior Mycah Wainscott plans to continue her athletic career at Black Hills State University next fall.

Black Hills State, based in Spearfish, South Dakota, officially announced Wainscott’s signing earlier this month.

“We are very excited to welcome Mycah to our program,” BHSU head golf coach Kelly Welker said in a news release. “She’s built an impressive high school resume throughout her junior golf career. She will be a great addition to our program next August.”

Wainscott won All State honors her junior and senior years and earned All Conference honors for three straight years. Amid some tough weather in Afton, Wainscott fired rounds of 85 and 95 to finish in a tie for third at the Class 3A State Tournament in September.

Wainscott had to go it alone last fall, being the only girl on the Powell golf team, but she’ll join a full roster at BHSU.

“This is a great accomplishment for her and having the opportunity to play at a Division 2 school will be a perfect fit for her in both school and golf,” said PHS golf coach Troy Hildebrand.

Choosing a college can be a challenge, but Black Hills wound up being the clear choice for Wainscott, who grew up in Spearfish — and whose mother was also a Yellow Jacket.

“I really just love that area,” she said.

When Wainscott paid a visit to the BHSU campus, heard that she would be accepted and that Coach Welker wanted her on the golf team, “I was like, ‘Well, that’s easy: My mind’s made up,’” Wainscott recalled.

“I thought it’d be a good place to learn and further my golf career,” she added.

When she starts classes at BHSU in the fall of 2020, Wainscott plans to major in elementary education.

“They have a really good teaching program,” she said, “which is what I want to do.”

As for the athletic side of things, “I’m excited to see how I can improve my score, just from the year-round practicing,” Wainscott said.

By the time she graduates from the four-year university, the lefty hopes to be shooting in the 70s.

“I think that’s an achievable goal,” she said.

Wainscott said Coach Hildebrand provided a lot of help throughout her high school career — and that she’s looking forward to representing Powell golf at the collegiate level.
