VISTA volunteers give Homesteader Museum a deep cleaning

It’s a job that can take weeks.

But a deep-cleaning of the Homesteader Museum building and exhibits was knocked out in a matter of hours on Jan. 18 by local AmeriCorps VISTAs (Volunteers in Service to America), who observed a Martin Luther King Day of Service.

MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage volunteers to improve their communities.

Homesteader Museum is one of 10 sites to host VISTA volunteers in a program coordinated locally by Powell Economic Partnership. Jessica Lum Williams is VISTA supervisor for PEP.

Homesteader Museum is closed for the month of January, an annual ritual to allow for cleaning.

Michela Morrissey, the VISTA volunteer serving at Homesteader Museum, is helping the museum add a mobile exhibit program.

“With the development of educational traveling trunks, or mobile kits, Homesteader Museum hopes to be able to reach out into the community and take the museum beyond its walls,” said Brandi Wright, museum director.

In addition to the Homesteader Museum VISTA site, other VISTA members serve at Powell Makerspace, Plaza Diane Community Center for the Arts, NWC Foundation, Heart Mountain Interpretive Center, Forward Cody and Habitat for Humanity.

“Powell has so many non-profits who are doing great work,” said Rebekah Burns, PEP executive director. “The AmeriCorps VISTA program is a great vehicle for PEP to help build capacity for these organizations so they can forward their missions.”
