UW’s Powell research center hosts field day Thursday

Posted

The Powell Research and Extension Center is hosting the annual field day at 3 p.m. Thursday at 747 Road 9 in Powell.

There will be field tours, poster sessions, interactive presentations and family activities.

“This year we have expanded the program to include more short demonstrations where attendees can view up-close some of the devices and techniques our scientists use,” said Jim Heitholt, the center’s director.

Field tours allow all participants the opportunity to view crops such as barley, sugar beets, corn and dry beans. They will also see research studies evaluating varieties, irrigation rates, soil fertility and disease control.

The poster session will include presentations from graduate students, interns and industry representatives. They will discuss topics such as seeding rates, row spacing, remote sensing and dry bean, sugar beet and corn trials.

There will be interactive presentations on water in the soil profile, rooting characteristics and the use of moisture sensors from Powell Research and Extension Center’s irrigation specialist. There will also be a session on weed identification at different growth stages.

Vendors, sponsors and other groups will be present to provide literature and other information about their products.

A free dinner is at 5:30 p.m. to conclude the day’s events. All age groups are welcome to come and enjoy the tours, free dinner and festivities, said Heitholt. No RSVP is required, but those planning to attend are encouraged to contact the Powell center at 307-754-2223 or sfulton3@uwyo.edu.
