Two more qualify in double dual

Posted

Finishing just short of a goal can sometimes lead to greater motivation, and it was just what Taggart Shumway and Aidan Cannizzaro needed when they got back into the pool on Tuesday in Cody.

Shumway fell 0.3 points short of qualifying in diving on Saturday in Worland, but did not want the score to be so close this time.

A 38.5 point dive on his fourth attempt all but secured him a spot at state and the freshman pushed ahead of his previous best of 154.70; he finished in second place overall with a 170.75.

“Taggart [Shumway] was after it,” Panther head coach Stephanie Warren said. “He really just started those dives last week and only had one day this week to practice them, it was really exciting.”

Cannizzaro had a much tighter qualifying experience than Shumway.

Coming down the stretch, Cannizzaro needed to push the pace in the 100 backstroke if he wanted to qualify.

He had qualified in the 100 back two years ago before taking a year off from swimming, but the qualifying standard time had dropped since he last made it to state as a freshman.

Cannizzaro found the needed energy to push down the stretch, and despite finishing fifth in the race, qualified for the state meet by 0.15 seconds with a time of 1:08.45.

“It has been coming slowly since he took a year off from swimming,” Panther assistant coach Jerry Rodriguez said.

With those two additional qualifiers added, it brought the Panthers’ tally for the state meet to a baker’s dozen; the team has now qualified 13 swimmers and divers for next month’s competition.

The Panthers were locked in a double dual throughout the night with Cody and Worland. Powell beat Cody 123 to 54, and edged out Worland 96 to 84.

There were three individual event winners for Powell on the night, as sophomore Jon Hawley won diving with a score of 173.75, sophomore Gabe Rose won the 100 fly with a time of 1:03.53 and senior Nate Johnston won the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.52.

PHS junior Kobus Diver took second in both the 200 IM with a 2:30.42 and the 500 free with a time of 5:47.85, Johnston also took second in the 100 back with a time of 1:01.54. Senior Kyler Warren placed third in the 200 free with a time of 2:16.77, senior Caiden Gerhts placed third in the 50 free with a 26.90, senior Ben Hawley placed third in diving with a 168.40, junior David Polson placed third in the 500 free with a 6:18.30, junior Rui Parker placed third in the 100 back with a 1:02.63 and Rose placed third in the 100 breast with a 1:17.34.

“This part of the season we just keep the hammer down,” Rodriguez said.

The Panthers will have a short break as they host a quad with Buffalo, Cody and Worland on Saturday at 10 a.m.
