Tucson Bowl to feature Mountain West and MAC

Wyoming was the last Mountain West Conference team to face off against a Sun Belt Conference opponent in the Tucson Bowl.

Starting in 2020, the Mountain West will be paired opposite a team from the Mid-American Conference in Tucson. After the Cowboys’ 38-17 win over Georgia State on Dec. 31, the Mountain West maintained its unbeaten mark in the five-year history of the MWC against the Sun Belt.

However, there are a couple of asterisks in that five-year stint: The Sun Belt was only able to produce a bowl eligible opponent in three of the five games.

In the first year of the Tucson Bowl, in 2015, two Mountain West teams faced each other. Nevada beat Colorado State 28-23. In 2017, New Mexico State beat MW representative Utah State 20-17 in overtime.

In the other three years, Mountain West teams prevailed over the Sun Belt. Air Force took down South Alabama 45-21 in 2016, Nevada edged Arkansas State 16-13 in 2018 and Wyoming wrapped things up with its win over Georgia State last week.

This year’s bowl eligible teams from the Mid-American Conference include Miami of Ohio, Western Kentucky, Kent State, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Ohio University. Wyoming will face another MAC school next season, when the Cowboys travel to Ball State on Sept. 26, 2020.
