Trapping regulations available yearly from Game and Fish

Dear Editor:

Just wanted to reply to Suzanne Luhr’s letter to the editor on Oct. 13 on trapping.

She states that regulations are virtually nonexistent, that the Game and Fish doesn’t require that animals, target and non-target be reported. And that management all the way around is lacking.

The Game and Fish puts out a pamphlet with trapping regulations every year, just like it does with hunting and fishing. Trappers must also notify the G&F if a trophy, big game animal, game bird or protected animal or bird is killed.

There are furbearer harvest questionnaires that trappers fill out which helps the G&F monitor the amount of furbearers taken each year. There is also mandatory bobcat tagging which helps to keep track of trapping pressure and the amount of cats that are taken.

I realize she’s upset about the fact that occasionally a dog gets caught in a trap or a snare. Releasing a dog from a trap or a snare isn’t that hard. There’s informative videos on “Google” that show how to in detail. It’s not difficult.

If some trappers would use a little more discretion about where they set traps, and dog owners would learn how to release their dogs from a trap/snare, this issue would be greatly minimized.
