Fall to Laramie County, Eastern Wyoming

The women of Northwest College came up short twice on an extended road trip last week to Cheyenne and Torrington.

The Trappers (10-13 overall) dropped a 78-59 verdict at Laramie County on Jan. 29, then stayed on the road without returning to campus and fell to Eastern Wyoming, 67-52, on Saturday.

Coach Cam Levett acknowledged his squad “did not play well” against the Golden Eagles of Laramie County.

“Too many turnovers, too many fouls,” Levett said. “We sent LCC to the line 31 times. They made 23 free throws, we attempted 13. Not going to win many games when they make more than we attempt.”

He added that the Trappers “also did not shoot the ball,” making 33 percent from the field (22-of-65) and 20 percent (5-of-25) from 3-point range.

Samiyah Worrell finished with 13 points and four assists. Tess Henry netted 11 points and Lily Henry chipped in nine each of points and rebounds. Anna Terron’s 19 paced the Eagles.

Quarter scores for the Trappers of 17, 13, 14 and 14 compared to 23, 21, 18 and 16 on the Lancers’ side of the scorebook.

Things looked better to the coach against the Lancers of Eastern Wyoming where Levett’s team “really showed some toughness,” he said. “We played hard, played fast and physical” but “just couldn’t put the ball in the hole.”

The numbers were 18-66 for 27 percent on all field goals, 5-25 3-pointers and 11-19 at the line.

“We looked good at times, made some good runs” and “had it within five late in the third, but ran out of gas,” Levett reported. “Give Eastern credit, they are a good team.”

The coach was happy about the Trappers’ efforts on the boards, where they pulled down 14 offensive rebounds.

Worrell again hit double digits with 13 points, making her two-game total 26. Adela Smutna hit for seven points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Lancer Ane Esnal Aguirre led all scorers with 19 points.

The Trappers hosted Sheridan Wednesday night and are home to Gillette College at 2 p.m. Saturday.
