Track teams cap off regular season in Cody

Posted

In their last regular season event, Powell High School’s track and field teams displayed the same prowess they have all season.

Though team scores weren’t kept at the State Farm Trackstravaganza in Cody, the Panthers dominated in several events, both individual and relays. Just a week ahead of the regional meet, it was exactly what PHS head coach Scott Smith ordered.

“It went very well,” coach Smith said.

A handful of Panthers finished first in their respective events on both the boys’ and girls’ teams. Boys who won were Daniel Merritt (1600), Eli Weimer (high jump), Zach Ratcliff (long jump), Zeke Frankenberry (discus) and Toran Graham (shot put). For the girls, Jenna Hillman (100, 200, 400), Brynn Hillman (3200), Cassidy Miner (discus) and Reagan Thompson (shot put) all picked up wins.

A week after breaking the school record in the boys’ sprint medley relay in Cowley, the team did it again. The group of Kadden Abraham, Riley Bennett, Cole Frank and Ethan Bartholomew finished second with a time of 3:47.83. Meanwhile, Powell’s 4x100 boys’ relay team (Abraham, Ratcliff, Bennett and Reed Smith) finished first, logging a time of 45.14.

Individuals who stood out in Cody were Ratcliff and Thompson. The pair “showed improvement” and won against “very good fields,” coach Smith said.

The regular season is now in the rearview mirror, and the focus has shifted to the regional and state meets. First, PHS will compete at regionals on Friday in Lander. Heading into the postseason, coach Smith noted sprints, relays and throws as strengths for the girls, and throws and relays as the boys’ most competitive events.

The coach said the girls’ depth allows for chances to score in every event, with multiple potential placers in most. And though the boys will compete against stingy programs like Mountain View and Lovell at regionals, coach Smith said they can continue their excellence.

“Going into regionals, both teams have good chances at earning trophies,” he said.
