Temporary power outage planned for Tuesday morning

Residents and businesses in downtown Powell and on the south side of town should plan to be without power for 20 to 30 minutes on Tuesday morning.

Electricity will be shut off around 6:30 a.m. The outage will allow crews to prepare for repairs to the city’s Vining Substation, said City Administrator Zack Thorington.

The substation on North Ingalls Street was damaged in a June 29 explosion and fire that knocked out power for several hours. City workers were able to restore power that same day, but the substation is not running at full capacity and needs repairs; the damage led to another citywide power outage on July 23.

City officials have been asking residents to try limiting their use of electricity until the substation has been fixed.

Powell’s downtown area and the south part of town also lost power for about a half-hour late Sunday afternoon, but Thorington said that outage was unrelated to the substation. He said something tripped the circuit that feeds power to those parts of town.

“Crews turned it back on and couldn’t find anything that was the cause of the trip,” Thorington said. “Maybe another squirrel, but that’s speculation.”
