Swimmers land another qualifier Tuesday

Typically, swimmers don’t reach a state qualifying time when swimming a race for the first time. But in his first attempt in the 200 IM on Tuesday in Worland, Powell High School freshman Cole Fauskee became qualifier No. 15 for the Panthers.

Fauskee joined the long growing list of PHS qualifiers by posting a time of 2:28.96 — finishing more than three seconds below the qualifying time and taking second overall in the triangular with Cody and Worland.

The Worland Warriors were the victors of the night with 386 points, just ahead of Powell’s 363 points, while Cody finished third with 233.

It was the Panthers’ third meet in a week, but head coach Stephanie Warren was proud of the team’s effort.

“We had a pretty good meet,” Warren said. “The team is swimming tired and still getting good times.”

The sole individual event winner for the meet was senior Nate Johnston, who won the 50 free with a time of 23.98 and the 100 free with a time of 52.42. Additionally, the PHS relay team of Johnston, junior Rui Parker, junior Kobus Diver and senior Francis Rogers won the 400 free relay in a time of 3:57.14.

Other top finishers for the Panthers included: Parker, who finished second in the 50 free with a 24.30 and second in the 100 back with a 58.58; freshman Taggart Shumway placed second in diving with a 166.20; Diver took second in the 500 free with a 5:42.37; Rogers was third in the 100 fly with a 1:05.95; and junior David Polson placed third in the 500 free with a 6:05.25.

Despite being tired, the week is just beginning for the Panthers, as they head to Buffalo on Friday for a dual, and Gillette on Saturday for an invitational.

“We are still close to getting a couple more qualifiers,” Warren said. “There are a few boys like Aidan [Cannizzaro] and Tristin [Dicks] who are very close. Hopefully we will pick up a few more qualifying times Friday and Saturday.”
