Dear editor:

I am an old man and longtime Powell guy who discovered this summer that I love playing pickleball. It’s a little bit of exercise, a little bit of socializing and a whole lot of fun. And the game did wonders for my mental health. Instead of hiding at home, I looked forward to getting out and having fun with the pickleball crowd several times a week.

I was happy to hear that we could play in the armory when the weather turned and then we heard the college had leased the building for a temporary student union (which didn’t occur I guess) and that we would no longer be able to play there. In fact, we’ve been turned away pretty much everywhere.

So what’s wrong with us playing at the multipurpose building at the fairgrounds? The game doesn’t require a lot of space as two pickleball courts can be made of one tennis court, and we need two courts for the number of regular players we have.

Surely Powell doesn’t want to develop a reputation as unfriendly to senior citizens who want to get off their butts and move. Surely the rec district wants to help us out. Surely some place in Powell can be found to accommodate us.
