Superintendent launches new podcast focusing on education

Aiming to reach the community in a different way, superintendent Jay Curtis recently launched a podcast focusing on Park County School District No. 1.

The podcast — called PCSD#1 EdTalk — is available on iTunes and Spotify.

Hosted by Curtis, the podcast features different guests discussing topics related to the Powell school district and the field of education. One goal of the effort is to “celebrate the many accomplishments of our students and staff,” Curtis said.

In the first episode, Curtis talked with assistant superintendent Jason Sleep about achievement, accountability and district priorities. The second episode features a discussion about professional learning communities with Jason Hillman, principal of Parkside Elementary School.

With the legislative session underway, the third episode will feature Mary Jo Lewis, coordinator of business services, discussing legislative issues and the historical context of Wyoming’s funding model for schools. That episode is set to go live this week.

Curtis hopes to record the podcast every two weeks. He eventually plans to feature school board members, teachers and other district employees — and he wants to “show the human side of the district a little bit.” He talks with guests about their backgrounds and careers in education.

“As issues come up, I might start sprinkling in some monologue-type podcasts where I don’t have anybody come in, but I just address a topic,” Curtis said.

The superintendent said it’s been fun to record the podcasts, and he invites community members to share their ideas for topics or guests for future episodes.

“I do want to make this relevant for all of our stakeholders here in the Powell, Ralston, Garland, and Clark communities,” Curtis said.
