The State of Wyoming and the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) have filed a complaint against Chevron Corporation, alleging the company violated the Wyoming Environmental Quality Act.
When Chevron owned, leased, operated and controlled many service stations and convenience stores in Wyoming, its underground storage tanks leaked and caused environmental pollution and contamination, regulators allege.
Without notice to the State of Wyoming, Chevron made claims against its insurers for the leaking tanks and received millions of dollars. However, it did not use the settlements to clean up the contaminated sites, according to the DEQ. Instead, the State of Wyoming spent over $3 million cleaning up Chevron’s facilities. DEQ contends that Chevron must reimburse the state for those costs.
