State fire marshal still exploring cause of trailer fire

The state fire marshal has not yet determined the exact cause of a Saturday fire that destroyed a trailer house in Scott’s Granite Park trailer court.

Eric Siwik of the Fire Marshal’s Office was in Powell the day of the fire to investigate.

“I can say it is being investigated as an accidental fire, but I don’t have a determination yet as to the exact cause,” Siwik said Wednesday.

The trailer house was owned by Roy and Karen Lesher.

For his part, Roy Lesher believes fireworks could have been the cause. He said fireworks were discharged in and around the trailer court.

“I could be wrong, but that’s all I can figure out,” he said.

The fire started on the porch of the trailer and spread through the trailer house. The possibility that the fire could have been started by a cigarette was raised by Powell Fire Chief Dustin Dicks earlier in the week.

Roy Lesher acknowledged that his wife smokes. But by his recollection, the timing is in question.

“My wife left at 8 a.m. to go to Cody where she was operating her catering business during the Cody Stampede,” Roy Lesher said. “I left the trailer at 9:30 a.m., and the fire broke out an hour or an hour-and-a-half later.”

Asked about fireworks as a potential cause, Siwik said it “definitely is a possibility.”
