Slide repair project resumes on Chief Joseph Scenic Highway

Crews will soon begin reconstructing a 0.2-mile stretch of the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway as part of a $5.8 million job to fix a sliding section of the road northwest of Cody.

The work near the 8,070-foot summit of Dead Indian Pass on Wyo. Highway 296 was scheduled to resume on Monday northwest of Cody. Condon Johnson and Associates, Inc., of Kent, Wash., is the prime contractor.

“Work will consist of completion of building dirt grade, placement of crushed gravel base, paving, installation of guardrail, and reclamation,” said Wyoming Department of Transportation resident engineer Todd Frost.

The slide repair project starts at milepost 32.50 (about 15 miles west of Wyo. Highway 120) and involved the installation of 119 drilled shafts, each 39 inches in diameter, to stabilize the slide area.

Frost said the contractor’s schedule calls for about three weeks of work to complete the project, assuming there’s favorable weather.

“Motorists should expect traffic delays of up to 20 minutes during working hours,” Frost said. “Portable traffic signals and a single-lane road will be in place during non-working hours with traffic delays of up to five minutes.”

The 0.2 miles of the highway will be chip sealed in June.
