Eighth graders battle in tough team race

Hard work paid off for the Powell Middle School girls’ track and field program in Thermopolis on Saturday, as the seventh grade team walked away with a conference championship and the eighth grade team battled to a fourth place finish in a difficult competition.

The seventh grade girls used their depth to outmuscle Cody in the team race, as the Cubs finished with 164.5 points to Cody’s 137.

Two Cubs finished with individual titles, as Abigail Visocky won the 200 meter hurdles (33.5) and the pole vault clearing 7 feet, and Kindyle Floy won the high jump clearing 4-6.

Floy also finished with a second place finish in the 200 (29.35) and third place finishes in the 100 meters (13.8) and the 400 meters (1:06.75).

Sam Edgell earned a second place finish in the shot put (24-5) and Lily Sapp placed second in the pole vault (5-6).

“It was awesome to see the seventh grade girls win the conference,” coach Zach Coombs said. “They are our first seventh grade class to win since this year’s seniors were at Powell Middle School. They put in a ton of work and sacrificed.”

The eighth grade squad had a difficult meet, placing fourth behind Cody (144), Lander (110) and Lovell (95.5) as the Cubs finished with 77 points.

Powell did not have any individual champions at the eighth grade level, but came through with three second place finishes.

Leah Graham was runner up in both throwing events, finishing second in the discus with a throw of 89 feet, 1 inch, and second in the shot put (29-5 1/2); while Karee Cooley placed second in the 1600 meters (5:44.86) — Cooley had an additional top three finish, taking third in the 800 meters (2:41.7).

“The eighth grade girls have a great attitude and work hard,” Coombs said. “They improved every meet and just got better. I think in their junior and senior years they will be a force at Powell High School.”

After the conference meet on Saturday, the Cubs made the trip to Lander on Tuesday, May 9, to take part in the Best of the Best meet against all the top competitors from around Wyoming.
