Seventh grade Cub football team grows in 2020 season

In Wyoming, seventh grade is the first year students are allowed to play organized tackle football at their middle school. The Powell Cubs recently wrapped up their 2020 campaign.

Powell finished the campaign with a 3-5 record, steadily improving over the course of the season.

“The team improved throughout the year because of their dedication and hard work,” head coach Juston Carter said.

The Cubs began the season slowly, dropping contests to Cody before earning their first win over Cowley. After the Cowley win, Powell lost games to Sheridan and Worland. But the Cubs finished the year on a high note, winning games against Lovell and Lander to complete the season.

Carter noted a few individuals who played exceptionally well throughout the season.

Behind center, Caiden Nelson “continued to improve” as quarterback each game, the coach said. Tyler Wenzel was the Cubs’ leading rusher and was a “physical runner,” according to Carter.

On the line, Carter noted Mason Coombs as one of the team’s strongest blockers, consistently opening gaps for the backs. And defensively, Talon Nuss led the team in tackles.

This group will have one more year at the middle school level before making the jump to high school, and Carter said he’s excited to watch these athletes as they continue their development.

“The athletes showed a lot of heart by never giving up and battling until the final whistle was blown,” Carter said.
