School board self evaluation: Four categories marked as needing improvement

Posted

The Park County School District 1 board members determined they can improve on community and school communication, staying up to date on educational issues, acquainting themselves with school personnel and conducting school visits and reviewing reports.

The school board reviewed its self evaluation durning a meeting Nov. 21 and only four out of 25 items were marked as needing improvement.

In the self evaluation, trustees had to answer 25 questions based on whether they thought board performance was unsatisfactory, needs improvement, satisfactory or excellent. The remaining two questions were reserved for additional comments from trustees.

Four questions were marked as needing improvement by members of the board. The topics included whether or not the board seeks “systematic communication with students, staff and all elements of the community,” whether or not the board makes “every effort” to become acquainted with district personnel, whether or not board members inform themselves on important educational information and whether or not the board keeps informed about instructional programs through reports and visits to the schools.

Board chair Kim Dillivan agreed that while he thought most of the categories were excellent or satisfactory, there can be room for improvement.

“I think we make some effort, I don’t know that we make every effort. So we used to do the building assignments. It worked and it fell off after a while,” vice chair Trace Paul said. “I mean, it’s hard with schedules. Not only the board members’ schedules but the administrators schedule to meet with a tour through the building every month.”

Beginning in January the board will begin to work on improving school and community outreach. One proposed solution was  groups of board members would attend  events and visit schools when it aligns with work and administrator schedules. It was also proposed that the board would visit each school once a year.

The next school board meeting is scheduled for Dec. 13.
