Scammers again posing as local deputies

The Park County Sheriff’s Office has once again received several complaints from residents who received a call from a person claiming to be an employee of the office. The caller states that the sheriff’s office has a warrant for the resident’s arrest and then may demand that the victim send money or gift cards to avoid being taken into custody.

The number being used identifies as an actual number for the Park County Sheriff’s Office, but that’s only because the scammer is “cloning” the number to make the call appear more legitimate.

“The Park County Sheriff’s Office does not get involved with warrant notification via the telephone and we never solicit or accept money as payment for warrants or for any other reason, especially over the telephone,” the real sheriff’s office wrote in a Wednesday Facebook post. “If you receive a similar call, do not send any money or give the caller any personal information. Simply tell them that you will deal directly with the court.”

Anyone needing to make a report is asked to call the Park County Communications Center at 307-754-8700 to ensure they’re actually speaking to local law enforcement. Citizens concerned about the potential of a warrant can contact the Park County Circuit Court at 307-527-8590 to verify the information, though some warrants are also issued through the municipal courts (Cody at 307-527-7511 and Powell at 307-754-5106). Anyone can also check the sheriff’s website for warrants by visiting www.parkcountysheriff.net and clicking the “Warrants” link on the left side of the page.
