Saturday pie sale benefits Backpack Blessings program

Posted

This weekend you can enjoy pie for a good cause.

A Saturday pie sale at Union Presbyterian Church will benefit Backpack Blessings of Powell, a nonprofit that provides food over the weekends for local school children.

The sale takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the church on Bent Street, with the option to buy whole pies or by the slice.

“The pie sale is our biggest fundraiser,” said Marybeth Richardson, who serves on the Backpack Blessings board.

Last year, 79 pies were donated and sold.

“We’re looking for pies to be donated,” Richardson said.

Pies can be brought to the Union Presbyterian Church on Friday between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or around 9 a.m. Saturday.

All proceeds from Saturday’s sale will go toward Backpack Blessings. Currently, the organization serves 125 elementary school children in Powell, providing kid-friendly meals for weekends throughout the school year.

Every pack contains six meals and two snacks that children can fix on their own. The average cost per child is $6.27 each weekend, bringing the monthly cost to about $25 and nearly $200 for a full school year.

Overall, the total cost to operate the program for a school year is about $25,000. The vast majority of all donations go directly toward food costs, as program leaders have committed that no more than 5 percent will go to other costs, such as advertising and supplies, said Sandy Hatch, who is the coordinator for purchasing the food.

The program serves Powell’s three elementary schools as well as children at Head Start.

“We collect food, take it to schools and they get it to the children,” Richardson said.

The names of children served by the program are not disclosed.

Backpack Blessings of Powell recently became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Through the nonprofit status, donations to Backpack Blessings may be tax-deductible, Richardson said, and “it enables us to apply for grants from major organizations.”

A board oversees the nonprofit, with board members representing at least six local churches. For more information, contact Sara at 307-754-2491.
