Region’s snow water equivalent near 100%

Posted

The area’s snowpack Snow Water Equivalents (SWEs) is at 106% above average for this time of year, according to the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, but down 5% from this time last year.

Wyoming’s SWE is 78% of median with a high of 106% in the area surrounding Yellowstone National Park and a low of 10% in the South Platte basin. The Yellowstone area is the highest in the state as of Monday, according to the report. An additional 1.75-inches is forecast for the area through Jan. 11.

The Snake, Shoshone and Yellowstone areas are the only districts above normal in the state, with districts on the eastern edge of the state all well below average, although it’s still considered early winter.

Last year the state median average was 111%, up from 91% of average median in 2019. The reference period for computing medians/averages is the 30-year period from 1981 to 2010.
