Among the scores of players on Wyoming’s Class A American Legion Baseball teams, Powell Pioneer Colin Queen was chosen as the recipient of this year’s $500 scholarship.
Between his strong academic work at Powell High School, his involvement in many community and school activities and his performance on the baseball diamond this season, Queen “really qualified well” for the award, said Lin Bashford of American Legion Hughes-Pittinger Post 26. Bashford, who represents the Powell post on the state Legion’s baseball committee, added that Queen also wrote a “pretty impressive” essay on what it means to be an American citizen.
“He just was a standout for that scholarship,” Bashford said.
Queen will use the award towards his education at Quincy University in eastern Illinois, where he also will continue his baseball career as a member of the Division II Hawks.
The annual scholarships had been in some jeopardy this year. While Legion baseball continued in Wyoming, the American Legion National Organization entirely pulled out the 2020 season amid the COVID-19 pandemic and shut down all sponsorships. However, after repeated lobbying from the Powell post, the American Legion Department of Wyoming stepped up and awarded a scholarship to one player from Class A and another from Class AA.
“We want to thank them for actually doing the right thing,” said Post 26 Commander Russell Stafford.
Queen departed Powell for Quincy, Illinois, last week — though not before sending the Legion a thank you for the scholarship.
