National Alliance on Mental Illness of Park County will host psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner Brian O’Neill at its Monday meeting.
O’Neill, of Powell, will present on ADD/ADHD and mood disorders at 6:30 p.m. in the Cedar Mountain Room at Cody Regional Health. Like all NAMl meetings, the gathering is free and open to the public.
NAMI will observe ADHD Awareness Week from Monday, Oct. 14 through Sunday, Oct. 20 as a time to take stock of what’s known about attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is one of the most common mental health conditions in children, and although it is often thought of as primarily existing in children, much has been learned about its impact on teens and adults. About 10 percent of kids and 4 percent of adults have the condition.
Symptoms can significantly impact school, work and/or relationships, and lead to disruption of normal life. However, there is help available.
More than half of all individuals with ADHD also have co-occurring conditions like anxiety, depression or substance use disorders.
ADD is a common term for Inattentive ADHD. It usually means a person who is easily distracted, but isn’t hyperactive or impulsive.
O’Neill, owner of Beartooth Brain Works, graduated from Northwest College and the University of Wyoming and started practicing in Powell in 2012. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, he is qualified to diagnose, treat, and prescribe medications for brain disorders.
