Powell’s last dry cleaners closing

Posted

Terry Kay Funke Schleich has been helping out at the family dry cleaning business, Funke’s Dry Cleaners, since she was 15 years old.

For the last two decades, she has been more than helping out. She has been running the business.

“I’ll be 65 in August. I’ve hit the wall. It’s just one of those things,” she said this week as she revealed impending plans to close the longtime Powell business on Dec. 30, 2022.

The dry cleaning establishment was started by her parents in a downtown location on First Street in 1949, then moved to its present location at 185 N. Gilbert St. Her mother, Jean Funke, died in 1994, and her father, Erwin (Babe) Funke, died in 2008. He had stepped out of an active role in the business several years earlier.

“We’re going to close on Dec. 30,” Terry Kay said. “That’s a Friday. We’ll go ’til then.”

Funke’s Cleaners will take its usual mid-summer break from July 16-25, then be back in operation for the countdown to the end of an era.
