Powell XC ends regular season at home meet

Posted

About two months ago, Powell cross country began prepping for the season, running all over the town in an effort to gain endurance. The Panthers wrapped up their regular season Friday just a couple miles away from where this preparation started.

Powell Golf Club hosted the Pinnacle Bank Powell Invite, with PHS boys’ and girls’ varsity and JV squads competing against athletes from Cody, Lovell, Worland, Buffalo, Riverton and Lander Valley.

After several meets in a row away from home, it was nice for the Panthers to return to familiar grounds.

“I would like to thank the Powell Golf Club for allowing us to host our races at the golf course,” head coach Ashley Hildebrand said. “It is a beautiful and fast venue that we appreciate and are very proud of, and the fans, coaches and runners love it. It means a lot to us that our community is so supportive.”

On the boys’ side, Daniel Merritt was once again the top finisher. He recorded a time of 17:08.12, which was fifth overall and a personal-best time.

Joey Hernandez was close behind with an 11th-overall time of 17:52.31. A time of 18:34.86 earned Chance Franks a spot in the top 30, coming in at 27th.

Tyler Pfeifer and Riley Schiller rounded out the Panthers’ scorers with times of 18:50.34 and 18:58.17, respectively.

Overall, the boys’ team placed fourth, which impressed Hildebrand.

“I was very happy with that because we beat a few teams that have placed ahead of us several times this year,” Hildebrand said.

The girls’ team also finished fourth, with Kabrie Cannon once again placing as Powell’s top runner. She completed the course in 20:55.69, which was fifth overall.

In second for the Panthers, Meaghan McKeen logged a time of 23:33.12, 28th overall. Not far behind, Madelyn Horton and Hailee Hyde finished in 34th and 35th with times of 24:39.93 and 24:43.46, respectively. And Gabby Thomas was the fifth Powell finisher at 25:14.98.

Hildebrand noted McKeen, Horton and Hyde as standouts in the meet, saying, “These three have been working hard in practice and have been consistently getting faster.” Hyde’s time was a personal best.

In total, the Panthers achieved 13 personal-best marks, and Hildebrand said she thinks the team would have earned more if the temperatures had been cooler.

Now that the regular season is complete, Powell will head to conference on Friday in Riverton. The Panthers competed in Riverton in mid-September, so they already have a feel for the venue and how the course runs.

“We ran there earlier this season, so it will be nice to compare times and hopefully see a lot of improvement from the first time we raced there,” Hildebrand said.
