Powell Swim Club places second at summer state

The Powell Swim Club placed second in Division III with 210 points at the Summer State Championships in Gillette last month. A total of seven Powell swimmers attended the July 19-23 competition: Nathan Johnston, Karee Cooley, Kinley Cooley, Kacey Creed, Aiden Greenwald, Kaylen Greenwald and Josh Wright.

Johnston led the team with a total of 62 points. He swam in the boys 13-14 category, placing fourth in both the 100 meter breaststroke (posting a time of 1:28.63) and the 200 breaststroke (3:11.92). Johnston also took fifth in the 200 meter IM (2:53.35), while placing ninth in the preliminaries for both the 100 meter freestyle (with a time of 1:13.26) and the 50 meter freestyle (in 32.85).

The second highest scorers on the team were Kinley Cooley and Kacey Creed, with each posting a total of 46 points.

Kinley Cooley finished eighth in the 50 meter backstroke with a time of 47.18, seventh in both the 100 meter breaststroke (2:00.47) and the 50 meter breaststroke (53.14), and eighth in the 100 meter breaststroke.

Kinley Cooley also competed  in the “B” meet in the 50 meter freestyle, 100 meter butterfly, 50 meter butterfly and the 100 meter freestyle in the girls 10 and under age group.

Creed placed sixth in the 200 meter breaststroke finals with a time of 3:04.21, eighth in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:11.79), 11th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:38.48 and 14th in the 200 freestyle (2:24.48). He also swam in the 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

Wright swam in the boys 13-14 category and was fourth highest scorer on the team with a total of 39 points. He earned a seventh place finish in the 100 meter backstroke with a time of 1:22.74, fourth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:59.13, fifth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:22.07, 12th in the 100 meter freestyle preliminaries with a time of 1:14.45 and wound up 10th in the 50 meter freestyle preliminaries in 33.01.

Wright also swam in the “B” meet in the 200 meter breaststroke, 100 meter breaststroke, 200 meter IM and 200 meter freestyle.

Kaylen Greenwald, meanwhile, competed in the 8-and-under age group and scored 17 points. She swam in the 100 meter freestyle, placing 15th with a time of 2:54.54, 14th in the 50 meter backstroke with a time of 1:08.16, 12th in the 200 meter freestyle posting a time of 5:01.67 and 12th in the 50 meter breaststroke in 1:13.89 and 15th in the 50 freestyle in 58.18.

Kaylen Greenwald also swam in the “B” meet in the 100 meter breaststroke.

Karee Cooley and Aiden Greenwald recently “aged up” into higher divisions and also swam in the “B” meet.

In the 10-and-under age group, Karee Cooley swam in the 100 meter freestyle, 100 meter breaststroke, 50 meter freestyle and 50 meter breaststroke. Aiden Greenwald swam in the boys 11-12 age group and competed in the 50 meter backstroke, 100 meter freestyle, 50 meter breaststroke, 100 meter breaststroke and the 50 meter freestyle.
