Powell Pioneers finally take the field against Lovell on Wednesday

It might be the first American Legion Baseball game played in Wyoming in this baseball season turned upside down by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Or the first game played anywhere since social distancing restrictions were clamped down by governors across the country.

But baseball is back Wednesday night, when Powell will host Lovell at 6 p.m. at the Powell Pioneers Park in what both coaches acknowledge is a scrimmage game to get the dust knocked off.

“No one is really ready to play,” said Pioneers coach Joe Cates. “But it will be a chance to see live pitching, and that’s what we need.”

The Pioneers have been practicing for the last two weeks under social distancing restrictions. But those have been eased recently by Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon, and Powell and Lovell coaches jumped at the chance to actually play a game under scrimmage conditions.

“We will use mostly A and B players,” said Cates, “and use quite a few pitchers.”

The scrimmage game was hastily agreed to Monday evening.  Powell has tentative season opening games scheduled for Friday, May 29 at Billings, with the A team taking on the Billings Halos and the B team playing the 406 Flyers.
