Powell High School senior to represent Wyoming in U.S. Senate program

For the second year in a row, a Powell High School student will represent Wyoming in Washington, D.C.

Hattie Pimentel is one of two students from the Cowboy State selected for the United States Senate Youth Program.

“Each year, this extremely competitive merit-based program brings 104 of the most outstanding high school students ... to Washington, D.C.,” organizers said in a press release.

As part of the program, Pimentel will spend a week in Washington and have the opportunity to meet with President Donald Trump, senators, members of the House of Representatives, Congressional staff, a Supreme Court justice, cabinet leaders, an ambassador and senior members of the national media.

“I think mainly it’s about getting question-and-answer sessions with a bunch of different people,” said Pimentel, a PHS senior.

She will also receive a $10,000 scholarship.

Pimentel first heard about the Senate program through Nicole Sanders, who attended last year as a PHS senior.

“This is an amazing award that shows how our Powell students are achieving and eager to represent Wyoming,” said Kara Miller, PHS counselor.

Only two students from each state, D.C. and the Department of Defense Education Activity are selected for the intensive week-long study of the federal government. The other student selected to represent Wyoming is Thomas Lubnau III of Gillette.

Pimentel said she’s excited about the opportunity.

“I think it’s going to be really cool,” Pimentel said. “I’m looking forward to all of it.”

Pimentel will spend the week of March 3-10 in the capital.

Pimentel is also an active member of the PHS Robotics Club, and unfortunately, the Senate program is the same week as the super-regional robotics championship in Washington state.

If her robotics team advances to the tournament, she has already decided which Washington she will go to: D.C.

“I’m definitely going to this one — I knew it from the beginning,” Pimentel said.

She’s interested in law more than politics and hopes to study computer science for her undergraduate, then possibly go into law.

“Apparently there’s sort of a shortage of lawyers with a computer science background,” Pimentel said. She hasn’t decided which college to attend.

During her time at PHS, Pimentel has been involved with the National Honor Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Girls State. In addition to robotics, Pimentel is a member of the math team, ice hockey team and varsity Panther tennis team.

She is the daughter of Troy and Emelyn Pimentel.
